The traditional view is that temperature is the intensity of the thermal motion of a large number of molecules. However, this view cannot reasonably explain the existence of the constant geothermal gradient. This paper advances the notion that temperature is composed of the thermal motion of a great number of molecules and microparticles. The density of the microparticles in the Earth is closely related with the Earth’s gravitational field, and the temperature distribution within the Earth is a function of this gravitational field. Thus, because the density of microparticles in the Earth is larger than the densities of the corresponding particles on the surface, the temperature in the Earth is higher than the temperature on the surface. This paper improves upon the thermal vibration theory and uncovers the reason why the geothermal gradient remains constant.
