Some Comments on the Relation Between General Relativity and the Newtonian Law of Gravitation

It is a general opinion among the physics community that the best theory for gravitation is Einstein's general theory of relativity (GTR). Besides the fact that this theory has not yet found a way to be reconciled with the other great theory of the 20th century, i.e., with quantum mechanics, and despite many efforts to develop another theory that will produce the same experimental results as the famous four tests of GTR, it remains the basic tool in the confrontation of the problems of gravitation (and cosmology), particularly in the case of strong gravitational fields. In what follows we shall present some “naive” questions, mainly concerning the way in which a purely mathematical theory (that of the curved space‐time) was turned into a theory of gravitation.
