Gravitational Contribution to the Observed Redshift

Following Einstein, Dirac, and Schiff, we show that, when the gravitational redshift is treated in terms of potential, it may contribute to the observed redshift. This approach gives the shift in frequency for a satellite of the global positioning system in agreement with that given in the literature. Even without addressing any measurable effect in the redshift inferred from distant galaxies, the significance of this gravitational contribution increases with the ratio of stellar mass to radius and could help clarify excessive redshift already observed and interpret the strong gravitational effects in the nucleus of Seyfert galaxies.
