Group algebra requirements and the unitary [U(1)] nature of conventional electromagnetic fields place significant restrictions on the duality transformations for the symmetrized Maxwell equations. These restrictions are altered if electrodynamics is assumed to be governed by higher order unitary groups such as SU(2). These higher order group assumptions suggest the electromagnetic force equation for electric and magnetic charges may not be as simple as usually assumed and impact arguments for the existence of magnetic charge.
